【你的鳳梨的思想怎麼那麼深?!? ---- OUTLOOK & APPEARANCE】
一個學生的家人是農夫，說最近天氣熱讓鳳梨比較黑：

哇，真的是很大的影響！
問題在哪呢？

她是說氣候影響到 (affected) 鳳梨 (pineapples) 的外表，讓它們比較黑。
問題是，outlook 不是外表的意思！

Outlook /'ɑʊt,lʊk/ 最常見的意思就是「觀點」或「看法」。
就是你 look (看) out (出去) 的時候，會把眼界裡的東西視為怎麼樣。
也有一點「心態」、「態度」的味道。例如，它常搭配 positive (正面) 或 negative (負面)：
She has a positive outlook on life.
(她對人生的態度是相當樂觀的。)
He has a very negative outlook on life. I don’t really like talking to him about anything.
(他對人生的看法很負面。我不喜歡跟他聊任何事。)

所以，我們的「例錯」呢？
如果說 affected the pineapples’ outlook, 聽起來像鳳梨有大腦，然後它們的態度、觀點受到了影響----最近接觸了很多深奧的思想，然後鳳梨開始摸下巴想，「哎，鳳梨的生命到底有什麼意義呢？」
其實很好笑！
正確的句子應該是：
The hotter weather has affected the pineapples’ appearance.
(比較熱的天氣影響到了鳳梨的外表。)
Appearance /əˈpɪrəns/ 才是「外表」的意思。

其實，很多人也誤以為 outlook 可以說人的外表，像衣服與化妝。這也不行：
[X] She cares a lot about her outlook, so she spends a lot of time picking out her clothes and putting on make-up.
√ She cares a lot about her APPEARANCE, so she spends a lot of time picking out her clothes and putting on make-up.
(她很重視她的外表，所以會花很多時間化妝與選衣服。)

其實，outlook 還有一個很常見的意思，就是前景----未來發展、成功的可能性。如：
The outlook for the biotech industry is good.
(商用生物技術的前景是很好的。)
The outlook for the patient isn’t very good.
(病人的前景不太好。)
